MASENO UNIVERSITY

Maseno University founded in 1991, is the only university on the globe that lies along the Equator (00). It is one of the seven public universities in Kenya. The University is located in Maseno Township along Kisumu-Busia road, 25 km from Kisumu City and approximately 400 km west of Nairobi the capital city of Kenya. The University also shares its boundaries with Vihiga and Kisumu County.

Maseno University currently has four Campuses, a College and a Constituent College. Maseno Main Campus is in Maseno Township 25km from Kisumu on the Busia road. The core activities and central administration of the University takes place on this Campus. Homa Bay Campus is located at the SONYACO Plaza in Homa Bay town. Through this Campus, the University caters for the ever expanding demand for University education in the region. The eCampus is one of the latest innovations by Maseno University to facilitate online delivery of high quality certificate, diploma and degree programmes to learners in various parts of the country, the East African region and beyond. All programmes offered at the eCampus are primarily delivered through the internet, with students taking sit-in on-campus examinations at the end of each Semester. Kisumu City Campus College (former City Campus) became a College of Maseno University in December 2010. The College is within the Central Business District of Kisumu City and is exclusively served by a spacious parking yard situated directly opposite Kisumu Hotel (Maseno University). Bondo University College (former Bondo Teachers Training College) became a Constituent College of Maseno University in December 2008.

The name "Maseno" was coined by Rev. J.J. Willis out of the name of a tree known in local dialects as "Oseno" or "Oluseno" that stood next to the spot where the first missionaries in the region erected their base.

Maseno University’s history begun with the merging of Maseno Government Training Institute (GTI) with Siriba Teacher’s Training College to form Maseno University College as a Constituent College of Moi University. This led to its subsequent gazetting in October 1990 crowning the two institutions’ several decades of meritorious existence. It became a full-fledged University 11 years later, in 2001.

The University offers undergraduate and post-graduate programs in different disciplines at the following faculties and schools:
•    School of Arts and Social Sciences
•    School of Education
•    School of Science
•    School of Public Health and Community Development
•    School of Environment and Earth Sciences
•    School of Development and Strategic Studies
•    School of Graduate Studies
•    School of Business and Economics
•    School of Medicine
•    School of Agriculture and Food Security
•    School of Mathematics and Actuarial Science
•    School of Computing and Informatics

Maseno is a Public University, enacted by an Act of Parliament in 1991. In 2000 it was elevated to a fully fledged University. The current Vice-Chancellor of the University is Professor Dominic Makawiti.

Alongside its academic programmes the University also manages enterprises such as the Kisumu Hotel and the University farm where it produces agricultural products which are used within the university and the surplus supplied to markets around.

Maseno University is a modern institution of higher learning set up to advance teaching, learning, research and development that responds to the emerging socio-economic as well as technological and innovation needs of Kenya and the Eastern African Region. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dominic W. Makawiti, Maseno University has embarked on a mission to develop and deliver academic programmes that not only respond to the needs of industry but also prepare workers for the knowledge economy, in line with the Vision 2030. The programmes offered by Maseno University (referred to as ‘With IT’ programmes) ensure that all graduates of Maseno are adequately exposed to a knowledge-base that enables them to live, learn and work in a multi-disciplinary setting where ICT is as much a resource for learning and working, as it is a discipline in its own right.

Currently, Maseno University has a total student enrolment of 8,000 registered at the Main Campus, Kisumu City Campus College and Homa Bay Campus. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Madara Ogot, indicates that this number is expected to grow significantly with the launch and expansion of the eCampus of Maseno University that offers academic programmes through the Internet and other modern technologies to all who qualify, regardless of their physical location. Maseno University is therefore on track in globalising University education and providing high quality life-long learning opportunities, a deviation from the tradition of delimiting admission to physical availability of bed and tuition space at the University.

Egerton University is the premier Agricultural public University in Kenya.  It  has  however, broadened to other areas of research and teaching such as Natural resources, Applied sciences, Education, Computer science, Medical sciences, Education, Engineering and Business studies.
The University has 3 constituent Colleges which are; Kisii University College, Laikipia University College and Chuka University College.  These are autonomous except for using the Senate of Egerton University.
Currently, the University offers 63 undergraduate degree, 46 masters degree, and 36 doctorate degree programmes in its various faculties.
There are also 8 diploma programmes and a number of certificate programmes.
The phenomenal growth of the University is a reflection of the importance that the Kenya Nation attaches to development in those fields and in education in general.

STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY

Strathmore College was started in 1961 as an Advanced-level Sixth Form College offering Science and Arts subjects by a group of professionals, who formed a charitable Educational Trust (now the Strathmore Educational Trust). Saint JosemarĂa Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei,  inspired and encouraged them to start the College.
In March 1966, the first intake of Accountancy students, twenty-five in number, joined the Sixth Form students, and began preparing for the examinations of the UK-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). These first Accountancy students were sponsored by Shell East Africa, BAT (East Africa) and the East African Breweries. At this time Strathmore College was unique as a fully integrated post-Form 4 institution offering both academic and professional courses.
In October 1982, owing to the increased demand from companies for the professional training of their employees, the College began evening courses in Accountancy after normal working hours, with 60 students sponsored by various companies.
In 1986, in response to a request by the Trustees, the Government of Kenya donated 5 acres of land on Ole Sangale Road, Madaraka Estate. The European Union (EU) and the Italian Government agreed to back the Madaraka Campus project. The donors were keen to support a co-educational College that would offer courses in Management and Accountancy. Kianda College, an undertaking of Kianda Foundation, which was planning new developments at the time, agreed to run their professional courses in the new Madaraka campus.
Construction of the new campus commenced in September 1989. Meanwhile, in January 1991, the Information Technology Centre was started in the Lavington Campus to run computer courses leading to the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (formerly Institute of Data Processing Management) Diploma and Higher Diploma. In January 1992 a Distance Learning Centre was opened to offer correspondence courses in Accountancy to students who are unable to attend lectures.
In January 1993 Strathmore College merged with Kianda College and moved to Ole Sangale Road, Madaraka Estate.

Becoming a University
