Kimathi University College of Technology’s predecessor, Kimathi Institute of Technology (KIT) was established as a community project in 1972, opening doors to its first students in 1978. KIT rapidly emerged as a leading institution in the country in the training of Certified Public Accountants. Upon being upgraded to University status in 2007, KUCT admitted students in a range of degree programmes in Business, Actuarial Science, ICT and Engineering disciplines alongside Diploma and certificate courses. These are flagship programmes and are a critical demonstration of KUCT’s commitment to becoming a premier Technological University.
Kimathi University College of Technology was
established as a Constituent College of JKUAT in August 2007. It is now
a Government institution run through a University College Council. The
Council Chairman is David Wachira, who is also the Managing Director of
Consolidated Bank of Kenya. The vice chairman is Justus Mutiga. The
council includes people with diverse experiences in industry, civil
service, international organizations, community leadership and in
education. Prof. Francis Gichaga, the Chancellor of JKUAT is a member
of the council alongside Prof. Mabel Imbuga, Vice Chancellor JKUAT.
Other members include Prof. Crispus Kiamba, the Permanent Secretary
Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Joseph Kinyua,
Permanent secretary ministry of Finance, Ishard Ibrahim, Eng. J.
Musyoki,and Wahu Kaara . The principal is Prof. Ndirangu Kioni, formerly
Dean of Faculty of Engineering at JKUAT.
KUCT is already implementing an ambitious
physical facilities development programme to support the realization of
her Vision and Mission. The University College has in place a
magnificient Resource Centre, which is a multi-purpose facility whose
two phases are complete now.The Resource Centre comprises Lecture
theatres, Library, Laborotaries and offices for both administrative and
academic staff.
In line with her vision of being a premier
technology university College excelling in quality Education, Research
and Technology transfer, KUCT has put up expansive and well equipped
Engineering workshops and supporting Physics and Chemistry laboratories.
Subsequent phases of development comprise
two academic blocks, one to house ICT labs and lecture rooms . In
addition, the university college has constructed a spacious and
magnificient dining facility and diverse sporting fields for her
students.
The management of KUCT envisages that this
institution will soon emerge as a unique technological University with a
major impact on national development when it implements most of her
development plans embedded in her vision whose blueprint is vision 2030.
